Hotel Martinez

Charles Palmero · Cannes, France · 1929

Hotel Martinez is one of the central Art Deco landmarks of La Croisette and a major component of Cannes’ resort identity. Inaugurated in 1929, it was developed by Emmanuel Martinez and designed by architect Charles Palmero at a moment when Cannes was consolidating its image as an international luxury destination. The building’s long façade, horizontal emphasis, balconies, and pale Mediterranean presence give it a different character from the older Belle Époque palace hotels nearby. Its scale also reflects a shift in hotel architecture toward larger, more modern, service-oriented resort buildings. Over time, the Martinez became inseparable from the Cannes Film Festival landscape, functioning not only as accommodation but also as a social and symbolic stage for the city. Architecturally, it is valuable because it shows how Art Deco adapted to the seafront hotel typology: streamlined, elegant, repetitive, and image-conscious, but still urban enough to define a major stretch of the promenade.
