Hotel Kazakhstan
Yuri Ratushny + Leonid Ukhobotov + A. Anchugov + V. Kashtanov · Almaty, Kazakhstan · 1977
Hotel Kazakhstan is one of Almaty’s defining Soviet-modernist high-rises. The slender tower rises above a low base with a repetitive façade grid and a distinctive crown, giving it a strong vertical presence against the backdrop of the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains. Designed by a Kazakh Soviet architectural team and opened in 1977, the building represented a new scale of tourism and hospitality infrastructure for the city. Its form, prominent Dostyk Avenue location and continued hotel use have made it a persistent symbol of late-Soviet Almaty.
