Hospicio Cabañas

Manuel Tolsá · Guadalajara, Mexico · 1810

Hospicio Cabañas is a vast charitable institution organized around a rational sequence of courtyards, arcades and wards. Manuel Tolsá’s neoclassical plan creates clear circulation and abundant daylight across a complex designed for orphaned, elderly and sick residents. The central chapel is marked by a prominent dome later enriched by José Clemente Orozco’s mural cycle. Completed in the early nineteenth century and now used as a cultural institution, the complex is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a major precedent for large-scale civic architecture in Mexico.
