Holy Trinity Church, Karakol

Russian Orthodox builders · Karakol, Kyrgyzstan · 1895

Karakol’s Holy Trinity Church is a timber Orthodox church whose steep roofs, domes and bell tower form one of the city’s most recognizable pre-Soviet landmarks. The present wooden structure replaced an earlier masonry church damaged by earthquake, making its construction closely tied to the region’s seismic conditions. Interior icons, painted surfaces and exposed timber create a markedly different atmosphere from nearby Islamic architecture. Completed in the 1890s, the church reflects the Russian imperial development of Karakol while remaining a valuable example of nineteenth-century wooden ecclesiastical construction in Central Asia.
