Hollyhock House
Frank Lloyd Wright · Los Angeles, United States · 1921
Designed for oil heiress and arts patron Aline Barnsdall, Hollyhock House adapts Wright’s architecture to Southern California through terraces, courtyards, broad rooflines and extensive connections between indoor and outdoor rooms. Repeated abstract hollyhock motifs unify concrete ornament, furniture and architectural detail. Completed in 1921, the building shows Wright moving away from the Prairie House toward a heavier, more monumental vocabulary that influenced the development of modern architecture in Los Angeles.
