Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum

Kenzo Tange; Takashi Asada; Sachio Otani · Hiroshima, Japan · 1955

Kenzo Tange's museum is raised on pilotis to preserve a visual and pedestrian axis through Peace Memorial Park toward the Atomic Bomb Dome. The long concrete volume is severe and deliberately restrained, allowing the open ground plane and broader memorial landscape to carry equal importance. It is one of the defining works of Japanese postwar modernism and central to Tange's reconstruction plan for Hiroshima.
