Hiroo Higashi Park Toilet

Tomohito Ushiro · Tokyo, Japan · 2022

Hiroo Higashi Park Toilet, designed by Tomohito Ushiro, combines public infrastructure with digital light art. The building uses illuminated panels that display changing patterns, connecting the restroom to a broader visual and social idea rather than presenting it as a purely functional facility. This approach expands the language of THE TOKYO TOILET project by adding media, data, and night-time atmosphere to the design of civic amenities. Located in a park setting, the restroom becomes part of the public experience even for people who are simply passing by. Its illuminated surfaces improve visibility and identity, while also suggesting that small urban structures can contribute to the cultural life of a neighborhood. The project is a compact example of infrastructure as both service and urban artwork.
