High Court of Australia

Edwards Madigan Torzillo & Briggs / Christopher Kringas · Canberra, Australia · 1980

The High Court building is a monumental exposed-concrete composition overlooking Lake Burley Griffin. Large stepped volumes contain the courtrooms while a soaring public hall creates a dramatic vertical interior animated by daylight and views toward the National Gallery. The building’s structure and material are deliberately legible, giving the institution a robust civic presence without relying on historical courthouse imagery. Designed by Edwards Madigan Torzillo & Briggs, with Christopher Kringas central to the project, it opened in 1980 and remains one of Australia’s most significant brutalist public buildings.
