Higashi Sanchome Toilet
Nao Tamura · Tokyo, Japan · 2020
Higashi Sanchome Toilet, designed by Nao Tamura, is inspired by Origata, the traditional Japanese art of gift wrapping. This reference gives the project a sense of care, presentation, and respect that is unusual for a public restroom. The building’s red form and folded surfaces transform a small urban facility into a symbolic gesture of hospitality. In the context of THE TOKYO TOILET initiative, the design is important because it connects public sanitation with cultural expression and emotional tone. Rather than hiding the restroom, Tamura makes it visible, memorable, and generous in spirit. The project suggests that even the most ordinary public functions can be designed with dignity and cultural meaning, reinforcing the idea that good infrastructure contributes directly to the quality of urban life.
