Heisei Chishinkan Wing, Kyoto National Museum

Yoshio Taniguchi · Kyoto, Japan · 2013

Yoshio Taniguchi's collections wing places a restrained contemporary museum beside the historic Meiji-era building without competing with it. Long horizontal lines, water, pale stone and carefully framed views reinterpret spatial qualities associated with traditional Japanese architecture through an abstract modern vocabulary. The galleries are deliberately quiet and technically precise, while the entrance sequence gives the older museum grounds a new civic order.
