Heide II

David McGlashan / McGlashan Everist · Melbourne, Australia · 1965

Heide II was commissioned by art patrons John and Sunday Reed as a house that could also function as an intimate gallery. David McGlashan designed a restrained modern composition of pale masonry walls, carefully framed openings and interconnected rooms extending into the garden. The house avoids overt monumentality and instead relies on natural light, proportion and a close relationship to the surrounding landscape. Built in 1965 and later incorporated into Heide Museum of Modern Art, it is an important example of Melbourne modernism shaped by art collecting and domestic life.
