Hearst Tower
Norman Foster · New York, United States · 2006
Hearst Tower, completed in 2006, is a prominent commercial skyscraper in New York City, designed by Norman Foster. It is notable for its innovative diagrid structural system, which creates a striking facade of triangular frames. This system uses 20% less steel than a conventional steel frame and is an early example of sustainable design principles in high-rise construction, incorporating features like a rainwater collection system for cooling and landscaping. The tower stands on the base of the original six-story Hearst International Building, a 1928 Art Deco structure designed by Joseph Urban and George B. Post. Foster's design skillfully integrates the contemporary glass and steel tower above the historic masonry base, creating a dialogue between old and new architecture. The building received LEED Gold certification, a testament to its environmentally conscious design and construction.
