Haji Yaqub Mosque
Local Tajik builders · Dushanbe, Tajikistan · 1890
Haji Yaqub Mosque is one of Dushanbe’s most important surviving pre-Soviet religious buildings and long served as the city’s principal congregational mosque. The complex has been altered and expanded over time, but its historic core and prominent minaret preserve a direct link to the Islamic urban culture that preceded the Soviet transformation of Dushanbe. Ornament, courtyards and prayer spaces create a more incremental architectural character than the capital’s recent monumental mosques. Dating to 1890, the mosque offers an important historical counterpoint to twentieth- and twenty-first-century civic development around it.
