Hadassah Ein Kerem Synagogue
Joseph Neufeld · Jerusalem, Israel · 1961
The Hadassah Ein Kerem Synagogue, completed in 1961, is an integral part of the Hadassah Medical Center campus in Jerusalem. Architect Joseph Neufeld designed the building, which is perhaps best known for housing the twelve stained-glass windows by Marc Chagall. These windows, depicting the Twelve Tribes of Israel, became a significant artistic and spiritual draw following their installation. The design of the synagogue focuses on creating an appropriate setting for these iconic artworks. Its modernist forms and understated material palette allow the vibrant colors and detailed narratives of Chagall's windows to dominate the interior space, blending religious function with a prominent artistic installation.
