Guatemala City Cathedral

Marcos Ibáñez + Santiago Marquí + Antonio Bernasconi · Guatemala City, Guatemala · 1815

The Metropolitan Cathedral establishes the eastern edge of Guatemala City’s principal civic square. Its broad neoclassical façade, twin towers and deep nave were developed after the capital’s relocation from Antigua, making the building central to the construction of the new city’s institutional identity. Repeated earthquakes led to repairs and alterations, but the monumental composition remains legible. The cathedral’s importance lies as much in its urban role on Plaza de la Constitución as in its individual architectural language.
