Great Stupa at Sanchi

Mauryan and later Buddhist builders · Sanchi, India

The Great Stupa at Sanchi combines a simple hemispherical mass with elaborately carved gateways and a carefully defined processional route. Its architecture makes movement around the monument central to religious experience. The surrounding remains document a long Buddhist building tradition, while the contrast between solid form and narrative carving gives the main stupa its distinctive character. Visiting: Entry is ticketed, with higher rates for foreign visitors. The site museum at the foot of the hill has its own small fee.
