Great Kyz Kala
Sasanian / early Islamic builders · Mary Region, Turkmenistan
Great Kyz Kala is a monumental fortified residence at Merv distinguished by its massive corrugated mud-brick walls. Deep vertical fluting strengthens and articulates the exterior while an elevated domestic and ceremonial complex once occupied the interior. Archaeological research shows multiple construction and occupation phases extending from late antiquity into the early Islamic period, so a single completion date would be misleading. The building is especially important for demonstrating how sophisticated large-scale architecture in Central Asia could be produced almost entirely from earth, and how defensive appearance, environmental performance and elite residence were combined.
