Grand Théâtre de Québec
Victor Prus · Québec City, Canada · 1971
Victor Prus’s Grand Théâtre de Québec is a monumental concrete cultural complex whose heavy exterior frames refined performance interiors. Deeply recessed openings, broad terraces and exposed structural surfaces give the building a powerful brutalist presence along Boulevard René-Lévesque. Inside, the principal Louis-Fréchette hall and public foyers are organized as a sequence of large civic rooms. Opened in 1971, the building became a major cultural anchor of Québec City and an important example of the province’s ambitious public architecture during the Quiet Revolution.
