Grand Postal Building
Miw Aphaiwong and Sarot Sukkayang · Bangkok, Thailand · 1940
Bangkok's Grand Postal Building is a monumental modern civic block on Charoen Krung Road. Completed before the Second World War, its long symmetrical façade, stripped classical massing and emphatic central entrance project the authority of the national communications system without relying on traditional ornament. The building's robust structure and generous interiors later made it suitable for adaptive reuse. The Thailand Creative and Design Center now occupies a substantial part of the complex, inserting contemporary learning, exhibition and work spaces while retaining the building's powerful public presence. This record treats the 1940 postal headquarters as the primary work and notes the later cultural conversion separately.
