Grand Palace

Royal court artisans under King Rama I · Bangkok, Thailand · 1782

Founded with Bangkok as the new royal capital in 1782, the Grand Palace is a dense ceremonial precinct rather than a single building. Successive reigns added throne halls, courtyards, gates and pavilions that combine Thai roof forms with Chinese and European influences. Its controlled sequence of exterior courts, palace compounds and sacred enclosures shaped the image of the Chakri monarchy and became a reference point for later civic architecture. The complex remains one of Thailand's most symbolically charged ensembles. Visitors should read it at the scale of the whole precinct: walls, axial thresholds, changing rooflines and carefully framed views are as important as any individual hall.
