Grand Mosque of Conakry
Unknown / Guinean state project · Conakry, Guinea · 1982
The Grand Mosque of Conakry is one of the largest religious complexes in West Africa and a major landmark of Guinea’s capital. A broad prayer hall, repeated arcades and four tall minarets create a strongly symmetrical ensemble organized around large ceremonial forecourts. The building’s modern concrete construction is combined with a recognizable Islamic architectural vocabulary rather than an abstract modernist language. Completed in the early 1980s, the mosque represents the scale of state-supported religious architecture that emerged in several African capitals after independence.
