Government House of Belarus

Iosif Langbard · Minsk, Belarus · 1934

Iosif Langbard’s Government House is a vast interwar administrative complex composed from long, severe wings gathered around a tall central block. The restrained façade, repetitive windows and minimal ornament place the building within the transition from Constructivist experimentation toward increasingly monumental Soviet state architecture. Completed in 1934, it became one of Minsk’s most important pre-war modern buildings and later formed a key edge of Independence Square. Its survival through the Second World War makes it particularly significant within a city whose historic fabric was otherwise extensively destroyed.
