Gosplan Garage

Konstantin Melnikov + V. I. Kurochkin · Moscow, Russia · 1936

The Gosplan Garage is one of Konstantin Melnikov’s later transport buildings and a compact example of his continued experimentation after the height of constructivism. A striking circular window and strongly modeled corner façade give the utilitarian garage an unmistakable identity, while the interior accommodates vehicle movement within a clear structural system. Completed in 1936 with engineer V. I. Kurochkin, the building sits at the transition between avant-garde functionalism and the increasingly monumental architectural policy of the Stalin period. It remains an important record of Melnikov’s work beyond his better-known clubs and houses.
