Golconde Dormitory

Antonin Raymond; François Sammer; George Nakashima · Puducherry, India · 1942

Golconde Dormitory is an early modern building designed for the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. Its concrete structure, repeated adjustable screens and narrow proportions respond closely to Puducherry's hot, humid climate. The project shows how modern construction could be combined with careful control of ventilation, privacy and daylight in a residential setting. Visiting: Private ashram residence. Exterior viewing only unless the ashram explicitly authorizes a visit.
