GINZA SIX

Yoshio Taniguchi / Taniguchi and Associates · Tokyo, Japan · 2017

GINZA SIX is the district’s largest contemporary retail and cultural complex, replacing the former Matsuzakaya department store site with a layered urban destination. Designed by Yoshio Taniguchi with a carefully detailed façade inspired by Japanese textile and screen traditions, the building combines luxury retail, restaurants, offices, a rooftop garden and the Kanze Noh Theater. Its value as an architectural landmark comes from its scale and from the way it internalizes public experience: visitors move through atriums, art installations and elevated open space rather than only through shops. In Ginza, where architecture is often compressed into narrow vertical façades, GINZA SIX offers a larger mixed-use model for commercial urbanism.
