Ginza Mitsukoshi
Mitsukoshi / multiple renovations · Tokyo, Japan · 1930
Ginza Mitsukoshi is a major department store facing the heart of Ginza’s central shopping area. Its architectural importance lies less in a single iconic designer gesture and more in its role as an urban institution: a large, multi-level commercial building that has helped define the rhythm, density and pedestrian life of the district. Together with Seiko House Ginza and Matsuya, it anchors the historic department-store layer of Ginza, against which newer boutique façades and glass flagships are read. The building’s street presence, entrances and illuminated frontage make it a recognizable part of the Ginza experience. It is useful in ArchiAtlas as a contextual landmark rather than only as an object building.
