Geisel Library

William Pereira · La Jolla, United States · 1970

William Pereira’s Geisel Library rises from a broad concrete base as a stack of cantilevered upper floors supported by eight massive angled piers. The building’s dramatic profile turns a university library into a highly legible campus landmark, while the upper reading levels gain panoramic views across UC San Diego. Completed in 1970, the architecture combines brutalist concrete construction with a futuristic image characteristic of Pereira’s larger civic and institutional work in Southern California.
