Gateway of India

George Wittet · Mumbai, India · 1924

The Gateway of India stands at the edge of Mumbai Harbour as a ceremonial arch facing the water. George Wittet's design combines a large central opening with domed corner elements and detailed stonework. The monument is best understood through its waterfront position and its relationship with the adjacent city, landing places and public gathering space. Visiting: Free and open around the clock on the Apollo Bunder waterfront. It is crowded in the evenings; ferries to Elephanta Island leave from here.
