Gare do Oriente

Santiago Calatrava · Lisbon, Portugal · 1998

Gare do Oriente combines rail, metro and bus interchange within a layered piece of transport architecture. Santiago Calatrava designed the station for Lisbon's Expo '98, giving the elevated platforms a distinctive canopy of branching supports. Below, concourses and pedestrian routes connect different modes of travel and the surrounding district. The contrast between the more enclosed lower levels and the light-filled platform roof is central to the architectural experience. Its repeated structural elements make a large interchange recognizable from a distance while establishing a clear rhythm for passengers moving through the station. Visiting: Station concourses have no admission fee. Train and metro journeys require tickets.
