Garden of Fine Arts, Kyoto

Tadao Ando · Kyoto, Japan · 1994

Tadao Ando arranges large ceramic reproductions of famous paintings within an open-air concrete promenade. Ramps, walls and water create a tightly choreographed descent where artworks are encountered at different scales and from changing angles. The project is small but unusually clear in demonstrating Ando's use of circulation, exposed concrete and controlled views to transform a difficult linear site into a spatial sequence.
