Gammel Hellerup Gymnasium
Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) · Hellerup, Denmark · 2013
Gammel Hellerup Gymnasium is an educational project that turns additions and sports facilities into active social infrastructure for an existing school. BIG inserted new underground and surface elements around the campus, including a sports hall whose roof becomes a soft, informal courtyard and gathering surface. The project demonstrates how school architecture can extend learning beyond classrooms by shaping circulation, recreation, and social life. Its low, curved forms contrast with the surrounding institutional buildings while remaining integrated into the campus. For visitors interested in public and educational architecture, the project shows BIG’s ability to transform a functional brief into a layered spatial environment that students can occupy in multiple ways.
