Gallery of Modern Art
Architectus / Kerry & Lindsay Clare · Brisbane, Australia · 2006
Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art is a broad, horizontal museum facing the Brisbane River. Kerry and Lindsay Clare developed a clear structural grid, generous overhanging roof and large glazed public spaces that mediate between interior galleries and the subtropical landscape. The building’s main circulation hall acts as a civic room while terraces and river views connect the museum to the wider Cultural Centre precinct. Opened in 2006, GOMA substantially expanded Queensland’s capacity for contemporary art and is a major example of restrained, climate-responsive Australian museum architecture.
