Galleria Umberto I
Emanuele Rocco · Naples, Italy · 1890
Galleria Umberto I is one of Naples’ most important nineteenth-century commercial interiors. Built during the period of urban modernization known as the Risanamento, the gallery combines shopping, circulation, and civic spectacle under a glass-and-iron roof. Its cruciform plan, domed intersection, mosaic floor, and ornate façades create an interior street that borrows from both infrastructure and theater. Architecturally, it demonstrates how late nineteenth-century European cities used covered passages to modernize commerce while still producing monumental public space. Located next to the San Carlo Theatre and near Piazza del Plebiscito, it remains a key urban connector and a strong example of architecture as commercial promenade.
