Fortress of the Immaculate Conception

Martín de Andújar Cantos · El Castillo, Nicaragua · 1675

The Fortress of the Immaculate Conception occupies a commanding position above the San Juan River at El Castillo. Completed in 1675, it formed part of a defensive system intended to control movement along the water route toward Granada. Substantial walls and elevated platforms make the relationship between military architecture and river geography especially clear. The approach through the present village helps explain why the fort's location mattered, while its internal spaces reveal the practical organization behind the defensive exterior. Visiting: A riverside heritage fortress reached through El Castillo. Confirm current admission and river transport separately.
