Fortezza da Basso

Pier Francesco da Viterbo; Antonio da Sangallo the Younger · Florence, Italy · 1537

Built as a Medici military fortress, the irregular pentagonal complex represents the transformation of Renaissance fortification under artillery warfare. Its later conversion into Florence's principal exhibition center adds another architectural layer, including twentieth-century pavilions embedded within the monumental defensive walls.
