Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice

Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates · New York, United States · 1968

The Ford Foundation Building places offices around a twelve-story landscaped atrium rather than around a conventional sealed corporate lobby. Kevin Roche and John Dinkeloo use weathering steel, glass and granite to frame a large interior garden visible from multiple office levels. The atrium functions simultaneously as circulation, shared space and environmental buffer, creating an unusually civic interior for a private institutional headquarters. Completed in 1968 and later renewed as the Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice, the building remains a landmark of humane corporate modernism.
