Fitzwilliam Museum

George Basevi; Charles Robert Cockerell · Cambridge, United Kingdom · 1848

The Fitzwilliam Museum presents its collections behind a monumental classical portico. The principal building was begun to Basevi's design and brought to completion by Cockerell, with the elaborate entrance hall added later. Its architecture expresses the nineteenth-century idea of the museum as an institution of civic and scholarly importance.
