The competition-winning station is one of the canonical works of Italian rationalism. Its long low stone facade deliberately avoids competing with Santa Maria Novella, while the luminous ticket hall, streamlined circulation and carefully integrated furnishings turn a major transport building into an unusually controlled urban interior.
