Finlandia Hall
Alvar Aalto · Helsinki, Finland · 1971
Finlandia Hall is the principal realized building from Alvar Aalto’s larger vision for Helsinki’s Töölönlahti cultural center. The main concert and congress building opened in 1971, with later extensions completing the complex. Its white exterior, stepped volumes and carefully shaped interiors combine civic monumentality with Aalto’s characteristic attention to movement, acoustics and material detail. Positioned between the city center and the bay, Finlandia Hall remains one of Helsinki’s major modern landmarks and an important late work in Aalto’s public architecture.
