Finland Station
Pyotr Ashastin + Nikolai Baranov + Yakov Lukin · Saint Petersburg, Russia · 1960
The present Finland Station replaced most of the nineteenth-century terminus with a restrained post-Stalin modernist composition facing the Neva and Lenin Square. Pyotr Ashastin, Nikolai Baranov and Yakov Lukin designed a low glazed passenger hall topped by a tall clock tower and slender metal spire. The project was developed between 1955 and 1960 as Soviet architecture moved away from decorative monumentalism toward simpler construction and clearer functional organization. Its modernist frontage and direct integration with the metro make it a key example of late-1950s transport architecture in Leningrad.
