Ewha Campus Complex
Dominique Perrault Architecture · Seoul, South Korea · 2008
Dominique Perrault’s Ewha Campus Complex places a large university program largely below ground, preserving the central campus as a landscape rather than filling it with a conventional institutional block. Two long glazed walls descend into a planted valley containing teaching, library, student and commercial functions, while broad landscaped roofs reconnect the campus above. The project turns circulation through the sunken canyon into the primary architectural experience and uses the underground strategy to moderate environmental loads. Opened in 2008, it is a major example of architecture operating simultaneously as building, infrastructure and landscape.
