Estadio Centenario

Juan Antonio Scasso · Montevideo, Uruguay · 1930

Built for the first FIFA World Cup, Estadio Centenario is both a major sporting monument and a significant work of Uruguayan civic architecture. Juan Antonio Scasso integrated the vast concrete bowl into the sloping site, using the Torre de los Homenajes as a vertical landmark visible from across the city. The stadium’s direct structural expression and monumental scale reflect the public works culture of early twentieth-century Uruguay and it remains a powerful piece of Montevideo’s collective memory.
