Engel House

Ze'ev Rechter · Tel Aviv, Israel · 1933

The Engel House, completed in 1933, is a seminal work of the International Style in Tel Aviv. Designed by Ze'ev Rechter, it is recognized as one of the city's earliest examples of architecture explicitly embracing the modern aesthetic. Its clean lines, flat roof, and unadorned white facade reflect the functionalist principles of the Bauhaus and other European modern movements. Notable for its cantilevered balconies and horizontal window bands, the building exemplifies features characteristic of the International Style's adaptation to the local climate and urban context. Its design contributed to Tel Aviv's designation as a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized for its exceptional collection of Bauhaus and International Style architecture.
