Ellora brings Buddhist, Hindu and Jain monuments into a long rock-cut landscape. Its most dramatic works reverse the usual process of construction by removing stone to release buildings, courts and sculptural surfaces from the hillside. The range of plans and religious programmes makes the site a major record of architectural invention across successive periods. Visiting: Entry is ticketed, with higher rates for foreign visitors. The site is closed on Tuesdays.
