Elephanta Caves

Early medieval workshops · Elephanta Island, India

Elephanta's principal cave combines a large columned interior with monumental sculpture and a clearly defined sanctuary. The architecture is formed by excavation rather than assembled masonry, making walls, supports and sacred imagery part of one continuous stone environment. The island approach adds a distinct landscape dimension to the experience of the caves. Visiting: Entry is ticketed, with higher rates for foreign visitors. The ferry from the Gateway of India is paid separately.
