El Castillo, Xunantunich
Maya builders · San Jose Succotz, Belize
El Castillo is the dominant monumental structure at Xunantunich, rising high above the plazas of the Maya ceremonial center and the surrounding Belize River valley. Its stepped mass was enlarged through successive construction phases and incorporates sculpted friezes associated with rulership, cosmology and ritual. The building’s elevated summit creates a territorial viewpoint while its broad base organizes the adjacent urban spaces. Rather than a single completed object, El Castillo is best understood as architecture accumulated through generations of political and ceremonial rebuilding.
