Edifício Copan

Oscar Niemeyer + Carlos Lemos · São Paulo, Brazil · 1966

Copan is one of São Paulo’s defining modern landmarks. Its immense S-shaped slab combines more than a thousand apartments with shops and services at street level, creating a functioning vertical neighborhood in the historic center. The sinuous plan gives the building a powerful metropolitan silhouette, while continuous horizontal brise-soleil establish its climatic and visual rhythm. Designed by Oscar Niemeyer’s office and developed with Carlos Lemos, Copan embodies the scale and optimism of mid-century São Paulo.
