Edificio Basurto
Francisco J. Serrano · Mexico City, Mexico · 1945
Francisco J. Serrano’s Edificio Basurto compresses an unusually dynamic apartment plan into a narrow urban site in Condesa. Curving balconies, a deeply recessed entrance and an expressive central stair give the building a sense of movement associated with late Art Deco and Streamline Moderne. Inside, the stairwell becomes the spatial focus, illuminated from above and surrounded by carefully shaped landings. Completed in 1945, the building remains one of Mexico City’s most distinctive examples of sophisticated mid-century apartment architecture.
