ECLAC Headquarters

Emilio Duhart + Christian de Groote + Roberto Goycoolea + Óscar Santelices · Santiago, Chile · 1966

The United Nations ECLAC complex is a landmark of Chilean modernism. A low horizontal concrete structure is organized around patios and a broad central meeting hall, with sculptural structural elements and integrated artworks reinforcing its civic character. Emilio Duhart and collaborators sought a modern institutional language tied to Latin American identity rather than a generic international office block. Exposed concrete, landscape integration and monumental yet accessible circulation make it one of Santiago’s most important twentieth-century public buildings.
