Ebisu Park Toilet
Masamichi Katayama / Wonderwall · Tokyo, Japan · 2020
Ebisu Park Toilet, designed by Masamichi Katayama of Wonderwall, uses a composition of multiple concrete walls to create a maze-like spatial experience. The design moves away from the conventional restroom box and instead creates layered circulation, framed approaches, and varied degrees of privacy. Its architectural language is robust, abstract, and urban, giving the small facility a strong sculptural identity within the park. As part of THE TOKYO TOILET project, the restroom demonstrates how public infrastructure can offer spatial richness even when the program is simple. The arrangement of walls creates a sense of discovery while still supporting functional clarity and durability. The project’s value lies in showing that the quality of public space can be improved through careful organization of thresholds, surfaces, and movement.
